Niagen
Niagen is a branded form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a naturally occurring form of vitamin B3 (niacin). It is marketed as a dietary supplement that can increase levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), a coenzyme found in all living cells that is essential for energy production and cellular metabolism.
Biochemistry[edit | edit source]
Niagen is a precursor to NAD+, which plays a critical role in cellular respiration, the process by which cells convert nutrients into energy. NAD+ is involved in various metabolic pathways, including glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the electron transport chain. By increasing NAD+ levels, Niagen is believed to support cellular energy production and promote overall cellular health.
Health Benefits[edit | edit source]
Research suggests that Niagen may have several potential health benefits, including:
- Anti-aging: By boosting NAD+ levels, Niagen may help to combat the effects of aging on a cellular level. NAD+ is known to activate sirtuins, a family of proteins that regulate cellular health and longevity.
- Metabolic Health: Niagen may improve metabolic function and support healthy weight management by enhancing the efficiency of cellular energy production.
- Neuroprotection: Increased NAD+ levels have been associated with improved cognitive function and protection against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
- Cardiovascular Health: Niagen may support heart health by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress.
Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Niagen is generally considered safe for most people when taken at recommended dosages. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as nausea, fatigue, or digestive discomfort. It is always advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
