Nickey Iyambo (20 May 1936 – 19 May 2019) was a prominent Namibian politician and a founding member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), which played a significant role in the independence movement of Namibia. Iyambo held various ministerial positions in the Namibian government after the country gained independence from South Africa in 1990.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Nickey Iyambo was born in Onayena, in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. He pursued his higher education abroad, a common path for many Namibian independence activists who faced educational and political restrictions in their homeland. Iyambo earned a medical degree, which made him one of the few Namibians of his generation to become a physician. His medical background played a crucial role in his approach to politics and public service, emphasizing health and welfare in his political agenda.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Iyambo's political career began in earnest when he joined SWAPO, the liberation movement that sought Namibia's independence from South African rule. His involvement in SWAPO led to his exile, a fate shared by many SWAPO leaders and members during the struggle for independence.

After Namibia achieved independence on 21 March 1990, Iyambo was appointed to several key government positions. He served as the Minister of Health and Social Services, where he focused on improving the health care system of the newly independent nation. Later, he held the positions of Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, among others. Throughout his tenure in various ministerial roles, Iyambo was known for his dedication to development and his commitment to the welfare of the Namibian people.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Nickey Iyambo is remembered as a steadfast leader in Namibia's struggle for independence and its subsequent efforts to build a stable and prosperous nation. His contributions to the country's health sector and his broader work in the government have left a lasting impact on Namibia's development trajectory.

Iyambo passed away on 19 May 2019, just one day shy of his 83rd birthday. His death was mourned across Namibia, with many remembering him not only as a politician but as a compassionate physician who dedicated his life to serving his country.
