Namibian
Namibia, officially known as the Republic of Namibia, is a country located in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Angola to the north, Zambia and Botswana to the east, South Africa to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The country is known for its diverse culture, rich history, and unique landscapes.
History[edit | edit source]
Namibia's history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years. The San people, also known as Bushmen, are considered the original inhabitants of the region. In the 19th century, the area came under the control of Germany, becoming a German colony known as German South West Africa.
In 1915, during World War I, South Africa occupied the region. After the war, the League of Nations mandated the territory to South Africa. The country remained under South African rule until 1990, when it gained independence after a long and bloody Namibian War of Independence.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Namibia is known for its diverse geography, which includes the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world, and the Kalahari Desert, which extends into the eastern part of the country. The country also has a variety of wildlife, with several national parks such as the Etosha National Park.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Namibia's economy is heavily dependent on the extraction and processing of minerals for export. Mining accounts for a large portion of the country's income, with Namibia being a large producer of diamonds, uranium, gold, silver, and base metals. The country also has a growing tourism industry, with tourists attracted to its wildlife and unique landscapes.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Namibia is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture and traditions. The country's culture is a blend of traditional African, German, British and South African influences. The official language is English, but Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, and German are also widely spoken.
