Nicodicodeine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Nicodicodeine is an opioid analgesic and cough suppressant, an ester of dihydrocodeine similar to but more potent than dihydrocodeine. It is not commonly used. It is categorised as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, with an ACSCN of 9307 and a 2013 annual aggregate manufacturing quota of zero.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Nicodicodeine is metabolised in the liver by demethylation to produce nicocodeine, and subsequently further metabolised to dihydrocodeine. It is also metabolised to dihydromorphine.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Nicodicodeine is almost always used as the hydrochloride salt, which has a free base conversion ratio of 0.914, the second highest of any opioid in common use.
