Nihar Ranjan Gupta

Nihar Ranjan Gupta (6 June 1911 – 20 February 1986) was an eminent Indian Bengali writer and physician. He is best known for creating the fictional detective character Kiriti Roy. His contributions to the Bengali literature have been profound and diverse, including novels, short stories, and essays, but his detective stories hold a special place among his readers.

Nihar Ranjan Gupta was born in Jessore, now in Bangladesh, into a Brahmin family. He completed his graduation in medicine from the University of Calcutta. Despite his professional career as a physician, Gupta's passion for writing never waned. His medical background often found its way into his literary works, providing a unique realism to the scenarios his characters would find themselves in.
