History[edit | edit source]

Nirvana was formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in 1987. The band released its first album, Bleach, in 1989 on the independent label Sub Pop. The album was produced by Jack Endino and featured drummer Chad Channing.

In 1991, Nirvana signed with major label DGC Records and released their second album, Nevermind. The album's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", became a massive hit and is often credited with bringing grunge music to a mainstream audience. Nevermind was produced by Butch Vig and featured new drummer Dave Grohl.

The band's third and final studio album, In Utero, was released in 1993. Produced by Steve Albini, the album was a departure from the polished sound of Nevermind and featured a more raw and abrasive style.
