Nissen hut[edit | edit source]

A Nissen hut is a prefabricated steel structure for military use, especially as barracks, made during World War I and II. The design was conceived by Major Peter Norman Nissen of the British Army in 1916.

Nissen fundoplication[edit | edit source]

Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia. In a Nissen fundoplication, the stomach is wrapped around the lower end of the esophagus and stitched in place, reinforcing the closing function of the lower esophageal sphincter.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During the procedure, the part of the stomach closest to the entrance of the esophagus (the fundus of the stomach) is gathered, wrapped, and sutured around the lower end of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter. The procedure is often performed laparoscopically.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Nissen fundoplication may be recommended for patients with severe GERD symptoms who do not respond to other treatments. It may also be used in the treatment of hiatal hernia.

Risks and complications[edit | edit source]

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with Nissen fundoplication. These may include difficulty swallowing, bloating, and flatulence. In rare cases, the wrap may become too tight and require further surgery to correct.
