Non-heart-beating donation

Non-heart-beating donation is a method of organ donation that occurs after the donor's heart has stopped beating, also known as cardiac death. This is in contrast to the more common method of organ donation, which occurs after brain death.

Procedure

The procedure for non-heart-beating donation begins with the decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. Once the decision has been made to withdraw treatment, the patient is taken off life support. If the patient's heart stops beating within a certain time frame (usually 30 minutes), death is declared and the organs are removed for transplantation.
