- Norton is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. It is one of the smallest cities by area in the state, covering just 7.5 square miles. - Norton was originally known as "Prince's Flats," named after William Prince, an early settler in the area. It was incorporated as a town in 1894 and later as a city in 1954. The city's name was changed to Norton, after the Norton Coal and Iron Company, which played a significant role in the city's early development.
