Nowata County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,536. Its county seat is Nowata. The county name is derived from a Delaware word "no-we-ata," meaning "come here" or "welcome."

Geography[edit | edit source]

Nowata County is bordered by Kansas on the north, and by Washington County on the west. The county's eastern border is with Craig County, and its southern border is with Rogers County. The county's total area is 581 square miles, of which 566 square miles is land and 15 square miles is water.

As of the 2010 census, there were 10,536 people, 4,202 households, and 2,884 families residing in the county. The population density was 18.6 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 73.6% White, 1.6% Black or African American, 16.6% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.8% from other races, and 7.1% from two or more races. 2.9% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
