Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is the regulatory body for the nursing and midwifery professions in Ireland. It was established to protect the public and ensure the integrity of the nursing and midwifery professions by maintaining a register of qualified practitioners, setting standards for education and practice, and investigating complaints against nurses and midwives.

History[edit | edit source]

The NMBI was established under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011, which replaced the previous regulatory body, An Bord Altranais. The Act aimed to modernize the regulation of nursing and midwifery in Ireland and align it with international best practices.

Functions[edit | edit source]

The primary functions of the NMBI include:

  • Maintaining the Register of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Setting standards for nursing and midwifery education and practice.
  • Approving and monitoring educational programs for nurses and midwives.
  • Investigating complaints and conducting fitness to practice inquiries.
  • Providing guidance on professional conduct and ethics.

Register of Nurses and Midwives[edit | edit source]

The NMBI maintains a register of all qualified nurses and midwives in Ireland. To practice legally, nurses and midwives must be registered with the NMBI. The register is divided into different divisions, including general nursing, psychiatric nursing, children's nursing, and midwifery.

Education and Training[edit | edit source]

The NMBI sets the standards for nursing and midwifery education in Ireland. It approves and monitors educational programs provided by universities and institutes of technology. The Board ensures that these programs meet the required standards and prepare students for professional practice.

Fitness to Practice[edit | edit source]

The NMBI has the authority to investigate complaints against nurses and midwives. If a complaint is made, the Board can conduct a fitness to practice inquiry to determine if the practitioner is fit to continue practicing. Sanctions can include suspension or removal from the register.

Professional Conduct and Ethics[edit | edit source]

The NMBI provides guidance on professional conduct and ethics for nurses and midwives. This guidance is designed to ensure that practitioners maintain high standards of practice and behavior, protecting the public and enhancing the reputation of the professions.

Governance[edit | edit source]

The NMBI is governed by a Board, which includes representatives from the nursing and midwifery professions, as well as members of the public. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization and ensuring that it fulfills its statutory functions.
