Nyamko Sabuni
Nyamko Ana Sabuni (born 31 March 1969) is a Swedish politician who served as the Minister for Gender Equality and Minister for Integration from 2006 to 2013. She is a member of the Liberals party.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Nyamko Sabuni was born in Bujumbura, Burundi, to a Congolese father and a Burundian mother. Her family fled to Sweden in 1981 due to political persecution. She studied law at Uppsala University and later attended Mälardalen University College, where she earned a degree in Political Science.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Sabuni began her political career as a member of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) in 2002. She quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberals party, becoming a prominent voice on issues related to integration, gender equality, and human rights.
Minister for Gender Equality and Integration[edit | edit source]
In 2006, Sabuni was appointed as the Minister for Gender Equality and Minister for Integration in the cabinet of Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. During her tenure, she focused on policies aimed at improving the integration of immigrants into Swedish society and promoting gender equality. She was known for her outspoken views on issues such as female genital mutilation, honor violence, and the need for better education and employment opportunities for immigrants.
Later career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the government in 2013, Sabuni continued to be active in public life, working with various organizations and think tanks focused on social policy and human rights. She has also been a frequent commentator on political issues in the Swedish media.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Nyamko Sabuni is married and has two children. She is fluent in several languages, including Swedish, French, and English.
