From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

O.J. Brigance is a former professional American football player who played in both the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the National Football League (NFL). Brigance's career is notable not only for his achievements on the field but also for his courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and his advocacy for ALS patients through the Brigance Brigade Foundation.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

O.J. Brigance was born on September 29, 1969, in Houston, Texas. He attended Willowridge High School in Houston, where he excelled in football. After high school, Brigance went on to play college football at Rice University, where he distinguished himself as a talented linebacker.

Professional Career[edit | edit source]

Brigance's professional career began in the CFL, where he played for the Baltimore Stallions. He was a key player for the Stallions, helping the team to win the Grey Cup in 1995, marking the only time a U.S.-based team won the championship.

Following his success in the CFL, Brigance joined the NFL, where he played for several teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and St. Louis Rams. Brigance was part of the Ravens' team that won Super Bowl XXXV in 2001, making him one of the few players to have won both a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl.

Battle with ALS[edit | edit source]

In 2007, Brigance was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Despite the diagnosis, Brigance has remained an active and inspirational figure. He continued to work with the Baltimore Ravens as their Director of Player Development, a position he has used to inspire and mentor current players.

Brigance Brigade Foundation[edit | edit source]

In response to his diagnosis, Brigance and his wife, Chanda, founded the Brigance Brigade Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with ALS. The foundation raises funds for research into the disease and provides resources and support to ALS patients and their families. Through his foundation, Brigance has become a leading advocate for ALS awareness and research, inspiring many with his resilience and positive outlook.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

O.J. Brigance's legacy extends beyond his achievements on the football field. His courage in the face of ALS, his advocacy for those living with the disease, and his work with the Brigance Brigade Foundation have made him a respected and inspirational figure in the sports community and beyond.
