OII Europe is the abbreviation for Organisation Intersex International Europe, a non-governmental organization that operates across Europe. It is dedicated to advocating for the human rights, recognition, and respect of intersex people. The organization works towards ensuring that intersex individuals have the right to bodily autonomy and integrity, aiming to end discrimination and to promote social inclusion.
History[edit | edit source]
OII Europe was established as part of the global network of Organisation Intersex International, which was founded to provide a platform for the rights and visibility of intersex people worldwide. The European branch was created to address specific issues and challenges faced by intersex individuals in the European context, including legal recognition, medical practices, and social acceptance.

- Raising awareness about intersex issues among policymakers, healthcare providers, and the general public.
- Supporting intersex individuals and their families through resources, guidance, and community building.
- Collaborating with other LGBTQ+ and human rights organizations to promote inclusivity and equality.
Activities[edit | edit source]
OII Europe engages in a variety of activities to achieve its objectives, including:
- Organizing conferences and workshops to educate and share knowledge on intersex issues.
- Participating in human rights advocacy at both the European and international levels.
- Conducting research and publishing reports on the situation of intersex people in Europe.
- Providing a platform for intersex voices through campaigns and storytelling.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its efforts, OII Europe faces several challenges in its advocacy work. These include widespread lack of awareness about intersex issues, entrenched societal and medical norms that favor binary gender models, and legal systems that do not fully recognize the rights of intersex individuals.
Impact[edit | edit source]
OII Europe has made significant strides in bringing intersex issues to the forefront of human rights discussions in Europe. It has contributed to increasing visibility and understanding of intersex people, influencing policy changes in some countries, and fostering a supportive community for intersex individuals and their families.
