Obliquus capitis superior muscle[edit | edit source]

The obliquus capitis superior muscle is a small muscle located at the back of the neck. It is one of the suboccipital muscles, a group of four muscles that are responsible for the movement and stabilization of the head.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The obliquus capitis superior muscle originates from the transverse process of the atlas (C1 vertebra) and inserts into the occipital bone, specifically the lateral part of the inferior nuchal line. It is situated deep to the semispinalis capitis muscle and is covered by the trapezius muscle.

Function[edit | edit source]

The main function of the obliquus capitis superior muscle is to assist in the rotation and lateral flexion of the head. When both sides of the muscle contract together, they cause extension of the head at the atlanto-occipital joint. Additionally, the muscle also helps to stabilize the atlanto-occipital joint during movements of the head.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Injuries or dysfunctions of the obliquus capitis superior muscle can lead to various symptoms, including neck pain, headaches, and restricted range of motion in the head and neck. These issues can be caused by trauma, poor posture, or repetitive strain.

Related Muscles[edit | edit source]

The obliquus capitis superior muscle works in conjunction with other suboccipital muscles, including:

  • Rectus capitis posterior major: This muscle is located deep to the obliquus capitis superior muscle and has a similar function in head extension and rotation.
  • Rectus capitis posterior minor: Situated between the obliquus capitis superior and rectus capitis posterior major muscles, this muscle also aids in head extension and rotation.
  • Obliquus capitis inferior: Located below the obliquus capitis superior muscle, this muscle assists in head rotation and lateral flexion.
