Ocular

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ocular refers to anything related to the eye. In medicine, it can refer to conditions, treatments, and health issues involving the eyes. The term is derived from the Latin word 'oculus', meaning eye.

Anatomy of the Eye[edit | edit source]

The human eye is a complex organ that allows us to see. The main parts of the eye include the cornea, the iris, the pupil, the lens, the retina, and the optic nerve.

Cornea[edit | edit source]

The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye. It helps to focus light on the retina.

Iris[edit | edit source]

The iris is the colored part of the eye. It controls the amount of light that enters the eye by changing the size of the pupil.

Pupil[edit | edit source]

The pupil is the black circular opening in the iris that lets light in.

Lens[edit | edit source]

The lens is a clear part of the eye behind the iris that helps to focus light, or an image, onto the retina.

Retina[edit | edit source]

The retina is the innermost, light-sensitive layer of tissue of the eye. Its job is to receive the light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.

Optic Nerve[edit | edit source]

The optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers. It connects the retina to the brain.

Ocular Conditions[edit | edit source]

There are many different ocular conditions that can affect the eyes, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eyes.

Ocular Treatments[edit | edit source]

Treatments for ocular conditions can include medication, laser treatment, or surgery. The type of treatment will depend on the specific condition and its severity.
