In 1879, the Ryukyu Kingdom was annexed by Japan and became Okinawa Prefecture. During World War II, Okinawa was the site of the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Okinawa Prefecture is largely based on tourism, agriculture, and the presence of United States Armed Forces bases. Okinawa is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and historic sites. The prefecture is also a major producer of sugar cane, tropical fruits, and vegetables.
