Old Pulteney Distillery[edit | edit source]

The Old Pulteney Distillery is a renowned Scotch whisky distillery located in Wick, Caithness, in the Highland region of Scotland. It is one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland and is known for its unique maritime character.

History[edit | edit source]

The Old Pulteney Distillery was established in 1826 by James Henderson, at a time when Wick was a bustling herring port. The distillery's location provided easy access to barrels and other supplies needed for whisky production. The distillery has had a tumultuous history, with periods of closure and changes in ownership. It is currently owned by Inver House Distillers.

Production[edit | edit source]

Old Pulteney Distillery uses traditional methods of whisky production. The distillery sources its water from the Loch Hempriggs, which is known for its pure, soft water. The distillery's stills are unique in design, with the wash still notably lacking a 'swan neck'. This is said to contribute to the distinctive character of the Old Pulteney whisky.

Products[edit | edit source]

The distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Old Pulteney 12 Year Old, the Old Pulteney 17 Year Old, and the Old Pulteney 21 Year Old. Each of these whiskies has its own unique characteristics, but all share the distinctive maritime character that Old Pulteney is known for.

Visitor Centre[edit | edit source]

The Old Pulteney Distillery operates a visitor centre, where guests can learn about the history and production of Old Pulteney whisky. The centre offers guided tours, which include a visit to the production areas and a tasting session.
