Olikoye Ransome-Kuti (30 December 1927 – 1 June 2003) was a Nigerian physician and health minister. He was a prominent figure in the field of public health and played a significant role in the development of Nigeria's health policies.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Olikoye Ransome-Kuti was born on 30 December 1927 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. He was a member of the notable Ransome-Kuti family, which included his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a renowned women's rights activist, and his brother, Fela Kuti, a famous musician and political activist. Olikoye attended Abeokuta Grammar School and later studied medicine at the University of Ibadan and the University of Liverpool.

After completing his medical education, Ransome-Kuti worked in various medical institutions in Nigeria. He was deeply involved in the fight against infectious diseases and was a strong advocate for primary health care.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

Ransome-Kuti served as Nigeria's Minister of Health from 1985 to 1992. During his tenure, he implemented several key health policies aimed at improving the country's healthcare system. He was instrumental in the establishment of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and played a crucial role in the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).

Ransome-Kuti was a vocal advocate for child health and maternal health. He worked tirelessly to reduce infant mortality and improve vaccination coverage in Nigeria. His efforts earned him international recognition, and he was a respected figure in global health circles.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Olikoye Ransome-Kuti was married and had children. He was known for his dedication to his family and his work. He passed away on 1 June 2003.
