Omnium is a type of track cycling event that consists of multiple races. The event is designed to test the versatility and endurance of the cyclists, as they compete in a series of different race formats over a single day or multiple days. The winner is determined by the cumulative performance across all events.

History[edit | edit source]

The Omnium was first introduced in the early 20th century but gained prominence in the modern era when it was included in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships and later in the Olympic Games. The format has evolved over time, with changes to the number and types of events included.

Format[edit | edit source]

The Omnium typically consists of six events:

Each event tests different skills, such as sprinting, endurance, and tactical acumen. Points are awarded based on the finishing position in each event, and the cyclist with the highest total points at the end of all events is declared the winner.

Scratch Race[edit | edit source]

The Scratch race is a straightforward race over a set distance, with the first rider to cross the finish line being the winner.

Tempo Race[edit | edit source]

In the Tempo race, riders earn points for each lap they lead, adding a strategic element to the race.

Elimination Race[edit | edit source]

The Elimination race involves the last rider crossing the line at the end of each lap being eliminated until only one rider remains.

Individual Pursuit[edit | edit source]

The Individual pursuit is a race against the clock, where riders start on opposite sides of the track and attempt to catch their opponent.

Time Trial[edit | edit source]

The Time trial is a solo race against the clock over a short distance, testing the riders' speed and power.

Points Race[edit | edit source]

The Points race is a longer race where riders earn points for sprints at intervals and for lapping the field.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

Points are awarded based on the finishing position in each event. The scoring system can vary, but typically, the first-place finisher in each event receives the most points, with subsequent positions receiving progressively fewer points. The overall winner is the rider with the highest total points.
