Orbicularis oris muscle
Orbicularis Oris Muscle[edit | edit source]
The Orbicularis oris muscle is a complex muscle located in the face. It is one of the muscles used in the facial expression and is responsible for the movements of the mouth and lips.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The orbicularis oris muscle is not a simple sphincter muscle like the orbicularis oculi. It consists of numerous strata of muscular fibers surrounding the orifice of the mouth, but has no bony attachments.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the orbicularis oris muscle is to control the movements of the mouth and lips. It enables us to close our lips, protrude our lips as in a pout, or contract our lips over our teeth.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the orbicularis oris muscle can result in a loss of muscle control in the mouth and lips, which can lead to difficulties in speech, eating, and facial expression.
