Order of the Starry Cross (Sternkreuzorden in German) is an Austrian dynastic order of knighthood founded in 1668 by Eleonora Gonzaga of Mantua, the widow of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor. It was created as a ladies' order, one of the few of its kind in Europe, and its membership was originally restricted to noblewomen of the highest rank. The Order was closely associated with the Habsburg dynasty, serving as a symbol of the close relationship between the imperial family and the female nobility of the Holy Roman Empire and later the Austrian Empire.
