The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is one of seven federally funded National Primate Research Centers in the United States. It is located in Beaverton, Oregon, and is affiliated with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The center conducts biomedical research on a variety of health issues, including neuroscience, reproductive health, genetics, and infectious diseases.

History[edit | edit source]

The ONPRC was established in 1962 as part of a national network of primate research centers. The center was originally located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, but it was moved to its current location in Beaverton in 1966. The center has grown significantly since its inception and now includes state-of-the-art facilities for animal care and research.

Research[edit | edit source]

The ONPRC conducts a wide range of research projects aimed at improving human health. Some of the key areas of research include:

  • Neuroscience: Studies on brain function and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Reproductive Health: Research on fertility, pregnancy, and reproductive aging.
  • Genetics: Investigations into the genetic basis of diseases and the development of gene therapies.
  • Infectious Diseases: Studies on the transmission and treatment of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and COVID-19.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The ONPRC features advanced facilities for both animal care and scientific research. These include:

  • Animal housing and care facilities that meet the highest standards of animal welfare.
  • Laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology for genetic, molecular, and cellular research.
  • Specialized units for imaging, behavioral studies, and surgical procedures.

Ethical Considerations[edit | edit source]

The ONPRC is committed to the ethical treatment of animals and adheres to strict guidelines for animal care and use. The center's research is overseen by an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), which ensures that all studies are conducted in accordance with federal regulations and ethical standards.

Education and Outreach[edit | edit source]

The ONPRC is also involved in educational and outreach activities. The center offers training programs for students and researchers, and it engages with the public through tours, lectures, and community events.
