Org 20599

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Org 20599 is a sedative and anxiolytic drug that is structurally related to the benzodiazepine family of medications. It was developed by Organon International, a pharmaceutical company that specializes in the development of innovative prescription drugs.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Org 20599 acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA_A receptor, the same mechanism of action as benzodiazepines. However, unlike most benzodiazepines, Org 20599 has a unique selectivity profile, showing preferential action at the α2 and α3 subtypes of the GABA_A receptor, rather than the α1 subtype which is responsible for the sedative effects of most benzodiazepine drugs.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Org 20599 has been researched for potential use in the treatment of anxiety disorders, due to its anxiolytic effects. However, as of now, it has not been approved for medical use in any country.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

As with all drugs that modulate the GABA_A receptor, Org 20599 has the potential to cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. However, due to its unique selectivity profile, it may cause fewer sedative side effects than traditional benzodiazepines.
