Org 26576

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Org 26576 is an experimental drug that was developed by AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company. It is classified as an ampakine and was primarily researched for its potential use in the treatment of schizophrenia and depression.

History[edit | edit source]

Org 26576 was first synthesized by AstraZeneca in the early 2000s. The drug was part of a larger research effort by the company to develop new treatments for mental health disorders, particularly schizophrenia and depression.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

As an ampakine, Org 26576 works by modulating the AMPA receptor, a type of ionotropic transmembrane receptor for glutamate that mediates fast synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. By enhancing the activity of these receptors, ampakines like Org 26576 can potentially improve cognitive function and mood.

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Org 26576 has undergone several phases of clinical trials. Initial trials showed promise, with the drug demonstrating a good safety profile and some efficacy in improving symptoms of schizophrenia and depression. However, later trials were less successful, and development of the drug was eventually halted.

Current Status[edit | edit source]

As of now, Org 26576 is not approved for use in any country. AstraZeneca has not announced any plans to resume development of the drug.
