From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Orwasher's Bakery is a historic bakery located in New York City, specifically in the Upper East Side and Upper West Side neighborhoods. Founded in 1916 by a Hungarian immigrant named Abraham Orwasher, the bakery is renowned for its artisanal breads and pastries.

History[edit | edit source]

Abraham Orwasher started the bakery in 1916, using traditional European baking techniques. The bakery quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality, hand-made breads. In the early years, Orwasher's Bakery specialized in rye bread, pumpernickel, and black bread, catering to the Eastern European immigrant community in the city.

In 2007, the bakery was purchased by Keith Cohen, who expanded the bakery's offerings to include a wider variety of artisanal breads. Cohen introduced a line of wine breads, made with grape yeast sourced from local wineries, a concept that was unique to Orwasher's Bakery.

Products[edit | edit source]

Orwasher's Bakery offers a wide range of products, including various types of breads, pastries, and cookies. Some of their signature items include the hand-rolled bagels, sourdough batard, and the wine breads. The bakery is also known for its jelly doughnuts, which are filled to order with a choice of homemade jams.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

Orwasher's Bakery has received numerous accolades for its quality products. It has been featured in several publications, including The New York Times, New York Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. The bakery was also included in the book "The Shopkeepers" by James and Karla Murray, which highlights the best of New York City's mom-and-pop businesses.
