Other specified paraphilic disorder
Other Specified Paraphilic Disorder is a term used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), a publication by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), to categorize paraphilias that do not meet the criteria for any specific paraphilic disorder.
Definition[edit | edit source]
The term "Other Specified Paraphilic Disorder" is used when an individual's paraphilic behavior causes significant distress or impairment, or involves non-consenting individuals, but does not meet the full criteria for any of the specific paraphilic disorders listed in the DSM-5. This category is also used when the clinician chooses to communicate the specific reason that the presentation does not meet the criteria for any specific paraphilic disorder.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of Other Specified Paraphilic Disorder is made when there is a clear presence of a paraphilia that is causing significant distress or impairment, or involves non-consenting individuals, but does not meet the full criteria for any of the specific paraphilic disorders. The clinician is required to specify the reason why the criteria for a specific disorder are not met.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for Other Specified Paraphilic Disorder typically involves psychotherapy, specifically cognitive-behavioral therapy. Medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may also be used to help manage symptoms.
