Otto Nothling
Otto Ernest Nothling (1 August 1900 – 26 September 1965) was an Australian sportsman who represented his country in both rugby union and cricket. He is one of the few athletes to have achieved this dual distinction.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Nothling was born in Teutoburg, Queensland, Australia. He attended Ipswich Grammar School where he excelled in sports, particularly in rugby and cricket. His athletic prowess earned him a place at the University of Sydney where he studied medicine.
Rugby Union Career[edit | edit source]
Nothling played as a winger for the Australian national rugby union team, also known as the Wallabies. He made his debut for the Wallabies in 1921 and went on to earn a total of 19 caps. His speed and agility on the field made him a valuable player for the team.
Cricket Career[edit | edit source]
In addition to his rugby career, Nothling was also a talented cricketer. He played as a right-handed batsman and a right-arm fast-medium bowler. Nothling made his debut for the Australian national cricket team in 1928. He played in a total of 19 first-class matches, scoring 1,000 runs and taking 50 wickets.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his studies at the University of Sydney, Nothling pursued a career in medicine. He worked as a general practitioner and later specialized in radiology. His medical career was as distinguished as his sporting achievements, and he made significant contributions to the field of radiology in Australia.
