Overton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,083. Its county seat is Livingston. Overton County is part of the Cookeville, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Overton County was established in 1806 from a portion of Jackson County. It was named for John Overton, a prominent judge and political leader in Tennessee. The county has a rich history that includes its role in the American Civil War, where it was a site of several skirmishes and military activities.

Geography[edit | edit source]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 435 square miles (1,130 km²), of which 433 square miles (1,120 km²) is land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²) (0.5%) is water. The county is located in the northern part of the state and is characterized by its rolling hills and fertile valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 22,083 people, 8,900 households, and 6,200 families residing in the county. The population density was 51 people per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

The economy of Overton County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade being significant sectors. The county is known for its production of livestock, dairy products, and crops such as corn and soybeans.

Overton County is served by the Overton County School District, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Livingston Academy, the county's high school. The county is also home to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Livingston, which provides vocational and technical education.

The county government is headed by a county executive and a county commission. Overton County is part of the 6th Congressional District of Tennessee.
