P2RX6
P2RX6 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the P2RX6 gene. It is a member of the P2X receptor family, which are ATP-gated ion channels and mediate rapid and selective permeability to cations.
Function[edit | edit source]
The product of this gene, P2RX6, belongs to the family of purinoceptors for ATP. This receptor functions as a ligand-gated ion channel and may transduce ATP-evoked nociceptor activation. Mouse studies suggest that this receptor is essential for normal pain perception and nociception.
Structure[edit | edit source]
P2RX6 is a trimeric ion channel that opens in response to the binding of extracellular ATP. Each subunit of the trimer comprises two transmembrane domains, with both the N- and C-terminus located intracellularly. The receptor is almost exclusively located in the plasma membrane.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in the P2RX6 gene have been associated with a range of pathological conditions, including chronic pain conditions, inflammatory diseases, and possibly also neurodegenerative diseases. However, the precise role of P2RX6 in these conditions remains to be fully elucidated.
