PATRIC: Pathosystems Resource Integration Center

The Pathosystems Resource Integration Center (PATRIC) is a comprehensive bioinformatics resource designed to support the research of bacterial infectious diseases. It provides a wide array of data, tools, and services to facilitate the study of pathogenic bacteria and their interactions with hosts. PATRIC is part of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Bioinformatics Resource Centers (BRCs) and is hosted by the Virginia Tech Biocomplexity Institute.

Overview[edit | edit source]

PATRIC integrates data from various sources, including genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic data, to provide a holistic view of bacterial pathogens. It offers tools for comparative genomics, transcriptomics, and other bioinformatics analyses, making it a valuable resource for researchers studying infectious diseases.

Features[edit | edit source]

Data Integration[edit | edit source]

PATRIC aggregates data from multiple public databases, including GenBank, RefSeq, and UniProt, to provide comprehensive datasets for bacterial pathogens. This integration allows researchers to access a wide range of information, including genome sequences, protein annotations, and metabolic pathways.

Comparative Genomics[edit | edit source]

One of the key features of PATRIC is its comparative genomics tools. Researchers can compare genomes of different bacterial strains to identify genetic variations, study evolutionary relationships, and understand mechanisms of pathogenicity. PATRIC provides tools for multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic analysis, and genome visualization.

Transcriptomics[edit | edit source]

PATRIC supports transcriptomic analysis by providing access to RNA-Seq data and tools for differential expression analysis. Researchers can explore gene expression patterns under different conditions, helping to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of infection and host response.

Pathway Analysis[edit | edit source]

The resource includes tools for pathway analysis, allowing researchers to map genes and proteins to metabolic and regulatory pathways. This feature helps in understanding the functional roles of genes in bacterial metabolism and pathogenesis.

User Interface[edit | edit source]

PATRIC offers a user-friendly web interface that allows researchers to easily navigate and access its resources. The interface includes search functionalities, data visualization tools, and customizable workspaces for data analysis.

Applications[edit | edit source]

PATRIC is widely used in the field of infectious disease research. It supports:

  • Vaccine Development: By identifying potential antigens and virulence factors.
  • Antibiotic Resistance Studies: By analyzing resistance genes and their distribution across different strains.
  • Epidemiological Studies: By tracking the spread and evolution of bacterial pathogens.
