PHF2
PHF2 (Plant Homeodomain Finger 2) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PHF2 gene. This protein is a part of the histone demethylase family, which plays a crucial role in epigenetic regulation of gene expression.
Function[edit | edit source]
PHF2 is a histone demethylase that specifically demethylates 'Lys-9' of histone H3, thereby playing a central role in histone code. It may act as a transcription activator that binds to promoters. PHF2 is also involved in hormone-dependent transcription activation, by participating in androgen receptor/AR transcriptional activity, for instance.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in the PHF2 gene have been associated with various human diseases, including cancer. In particular, PHF2 has been implicated in breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. It is thought that the protein's role in gene expression regulation may contribute to its involvement in these diseases.
