PPPA

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

PPPA or Pearly Penile Papules are small, benign (non-cancerous) growths that are usually found around the edge of the head of the penis (the glans). They are also known as hirsutoid papillomas and are not a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Description[edit | edit source]

PPPA are small, dome-shaped or thread-like skin growths that are usually yellow or white. They are often mistaken for genital warts, but unlike warts, PPPA are not caused by an infection and are not contagious. They are a normal variation in penile anatomy and are seen in about 20% of all men.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of PPPA is unknown, but they are not related to sexual activity, personal hygiene, or any known health issues. They are thought to be a normal anatomical variation and are more common in men who are not circumcised.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

PPPA are usually asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause any symptoms. However, some men may feel self-conscious or anxious about the appearance of the papules.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

No treatment is necessary for PPPA as they are a normal anatomical variation and do not cause any health problems. However, if a man is distressed about the appearance of the papules, treatment options may include laser therapy or cryotherapy.
