Paint.NET is a raster graphics editor program for Microsoft Windows, developed on the .NET Framework. It was originally created by Rick Brewster as a college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is now maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Paint.NET is primarily intended to be a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows.

Paint.NET was started as a project at Washington State University in 2004. The project was mentored by Microsoft and was intended to be a more advanced alternative to Microsoft Paint. The initial version was released in May 2004. Since then, it has undergone numerous updates and improvements, with contributions from both the original developers and the user community.

Paint.NET offers a wide range of features, including:

  • Layers: Allows users to work with multiple layers, similar to more advanced graphics software like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP.
  • Special effects: Includes a variety of effects such as blurring, sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise, and embossing.
  • Unlimited undo: Users can undo their actions an unlimited number of times.
  • Tools: Includes tools for drawing shapes, cropping, and selecting areas of the image.
  • Plugins: Supports a wide range of plugins that extend its functionality, including additional effects and support for new file types.

The user interface of Paint.NET is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. It features a tabbed document interface, which allows users to work with multiple images simultaneously. The interface also includes a toolbar, a color palette, and a history window.
