Panyu, officially known as Panyu District (Chinese: 番禺区; pinyin: Pānyú Qū), is a district in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. It is one of the oldest cities in China, with a history dating back over 2,200 years.

Panyu was first established as a county in 214 BC during the Qin Dynasty. It served as the capital of the Nanyue Kingdom from 204 BC until 111 BC. In the Han Dynasty, Panyu became a major port and commercial hub. It continued to play a significant role in maritime trade throughout the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Panyu is located in the southern part of Guangzhou, bordering the South China Sea. It covers an area of 661.88 square kilometers. The district is known for its scenic landscapes, including the Pearl River, and the Dongping National Forest Park.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Panyu is a major manufacturing center, with industries ranging from textiles and garments to electronics and automobiles. It is also home to the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Guangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Panyu is renowned for its rich cultural heritage. It is the birthplace of the Cantonese culture, which includes Cantonese cuisine, Cantonese opera, and the Cantonese language. The district also hosts several cultural and historical sites, such as the Nanyue King's Tomb Museum and the Baomo Garden.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Panyu is well-connected by various modes of transportation. It is served by the Guangzhou South Railway Station, one of the largest railway stations in Asia, and the Guangzhou Metro, which has several lines passing through the district. Panyu is also accessible by sea through the Nansha Port.
