Patisserie Valerie

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Patisserie Valerie is a chain of cafés that operates in the United Kingdom. The company was originally established in Frith Street in London's Soho district in 1926 by Madame Valerie to introduce continental patisserie to the English. It is now part of the Causeway Capital portfolio.

History[edit | edit source]

Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 by Belgian-born Madame Valerie. Her aim was to introduce a taste of continental patisserie to the British public. The café was destroyed during World War II and was subsequently re-established by Madame Valerie in nearby Old Compton Street.

In 1987, the business was purchased by the Scalzo brothers, who expanded the single Soho location into a chain of over 200 stores. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market in 2014.

In 2019, Patisserie Valerie entered into administration following a major accounting scandal. The company was subsequently purchased by Irish private equity firm Causeway Capital.

Products[edit | edit source]

Patisserie Valerie is known for its handmade cakes and pastries, as well as its continental breakfasts, lunches and fine teas and coffees. The company's signature cake is the Madame Valerie slice, a unique take on the traditional Mille-feuille.
