Patrick McGorry

Patrick McGorry is an Australian psychiatrist specializing in youth mental health. He is a professor of youth mental health at the University of Melbourne and a founding director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation (Headspace). McGorry's work has been recognized internationally, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of mental health.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

McGorry was born in Dublin, Ireland, and moved to Australia with his family when he was 12 years old. He completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney and later specialized in psychiatry. He also holds a PhD in psychiatry from the University of Melbourne.

Career[edit | edit source]

McGorry began his career as a psychiatrist in the 1980s. He has since held numerous positions in the field of mental health, including as a professor of youth mental health at the University of Melbourne and a founding director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation (Headspace).

McGorry's work focuses on early intervention in psychosis and the development of youth mental health services. He has been instrumental in the development of the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC), an innovative, evidence-based, specialist state-wide clinical program for young people with early stage psychosis in Victoria, Australia.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

McGorry has received numerous awards for his work in mental health. In 2010, he was named Australian of the Year for his services to youth mental health. He has also received the Centenary Medal and the Order of Australia.
