Paul Barringer

Paul Brandon Barringer (February 13, 1857 – January 9, 1941) was an American physician, educator, and university administrator. He is best known for his contributions to medical education and his tenure as the chairman of the faculty at the University of Virginia and as the sixth president of Virginia Tech.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Paul Brandon Barringer was born on February 13, 1857, in Concord, North Carolina. He was the son of General Rufus Barringer and Eugenia Morrison Barringer. Barringer attended the University of Virginia, where he earned his medical degree in 1877. He furthered his medical education at the University of the City of New York and the University of Berlin.

Medical Practice[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Barringer returned to North Carolina to practice medicine. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled physician and became involved in medical education.

University of Virginia[edit | edit source]

In 1889, Barringer joined the faculty of the University of Virginia as a professor of physiology and surgery. He was appointed chairman of the faculty in 1895, a position he held until 1903. During his tenure, Barringer was instrumental in modernizing the medical curriculum and improving the university's medical facilities.

Virginia Tech[edit | edit source]

In 1907, Barringer was appointed the sixth president of Virginia Tech, then known as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute. He served in this role until 1913. His administration focused on expanding the institution's academic programs and infrastructure.

Contributions to Medicine and Education[edit | edit source]

Barringer was a proponent of medical research and education. He published numerous articles on medical topics and was an advocate for the professionalization of medical practice. His work in medical education helped shape the standards and practices of medical training in the United States.

Paul Brandon Barringer married Nannie Irene Hannah in 1883, and the couple had several children. He was known for his dedication to his family and his community.
