Pecten ossis pubis
Pecten Ossis Pubis[edit | edit source]
The Pecten Ossis Pubis is a bony ridge located on the superior border of the pubic bone. It is also known as the Pectineal Line or the Pectineal Ridge. This anatomical feature is found in the pelvis of humans and other mammals.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The pubic bone, also known as the os pubis, is one of the three bones that make up the hip bone or pelvic girdle. It is located in the lower part of the pelvis, forming the anterior portion of the pelvic ring. The superior border of the pubic bone is marked by the Pecten Ossis Pubis.
The Pecten Ossis Pubis is a prominent ridge that runs horizontally along the superior border of the pubic bone. It extends from the pubic tubercle to the iliopubic eminence. The ridge is sharp and serves as an attachment site for various muscles and ligaments.
Function[edit | edit source]
The Pecten Ossis Pubis serves as an attachment point for several important structures in the pelvis. It provides support and stability to the pelvic region. Some of the muscles and ligaments that attach to the Pecten Ossis Pubis include:
- Pectineus muscle: This muscle originates from the pectineal line and plays a role in hip flexion and adduction.
- Inguinal ligament: This ligament attaches to the pubic tubercle and forms the lower border of the inguinal canal.
- Cooper's ligament: Also known as the inguinal ligament, it attaches to the pectineal line and provides support to the inguinal region.
- Femoral sheath: This structure covers the femoral vessels and attaches to the pectineal line.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
The Pecten Ossis Pubis is an important landmark in surgical procedures involving the pelvis. Surgeons use it as a reference point for various procedures, such as hernia repairs and hip replacements. It helps in identifying anatomical structures and guiding surgical incisions.
