Pentaerithrityl

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pentaerythritol is a white, crystalline organic compound that is used in the synthesis of polyesters, paints, varnishes, and other products. It is also known as Pentaerythrite or Pentek.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Pentaerythritol has the chemical formula C5H12O4. It is a tetrahedral molecule, with the carbon atoms arranged in a diamond shape. The four hydroxyl (OH) groups are attached to the carbon atoms, making it a polyol.

Production[edit | edit source]

Pentaerythritol is produced industrially by the condensation of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of calcium hydroxide, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting acetal.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Pentaerythritol is used in the manufacture of alkyd resins, which are used in paints and varnishes. It is also used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) stabilizers, rosin esters, and synthetic lubricants.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Pentaerythritol is generally considered safe for use. However, it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract if not handled properly. It is recommended to use personal protective equipment when handling this chemical.
