Peter Gzowski

Peter Gzowski (1934–2002) was a prominent Canadian broadcaster, writer, and reporter, best known for his work on the CBC radio show Morningside. His contributions to Canadian culture and his advocacy for literacy have left a lasting impact on the country.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Gzowski was born in Toronto, Ontario, on July 13, 1934. He attended the University of Toronto, where he studied English literature. He began his journalism career while still a student, working for the university's student newspaper, The Varsity.

Career[edit | edit source]

After graduating, Gzowski worked for several newspapers, including the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. He moved into broadcasting in the 1960s, joining the CBC as a host of the radio show This Country in the Morning.

In 1982, he began hosting Morningside, a morning radio show that would become one of the most popular programs in CBC history. Gzowski's interviews with a wide range of guests, from politicians to celebrities to everyday Canadians, were a hallmark of the show. He retired from Morningside in 1997.

Gzowski was also a prolific writer, authoring several books and contributing to numerous publications. His books often focused on Canadian culture and identity, and his writing was noted for its warmth and humor.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Gzowski's contributions to Canadian culture were widely recognized during his lifetime. He received several awards, including the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honor. After his death in 2002, the Peter Gzowski Invitational golf tournament was established in his honor, with proceeds going to support literacy programs across Canada.
