Peter Lesgaft

Peter Lesgaft (1837-1909) was a prominent Russian scientist, teacher, and founder of the physical education movement in Russia. He is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the development of physical education and sports training in Russia and worldwide.

Peter Lesgaft was born on September 18, 1837, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He studied at the Medical-Surgical Academy in Saint Petersburg, where he developed an interest in anatomy and physiology. After graduating, he served as a military doctor during the Crimean War.

In 1861, Lesgaft was appointed as a professor at the Medical-Surgical Academy. He began to study the physical development of children and adolescents, which led him to the idea of systematic physical education. He believed that physical education should be an integral part of the general education system.

In 1867, Lesgaft established the first gymnastics courses in Russia, which later evolved into the Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health. He developed a unique system of physical education, which included gymnastics, athletics, and games. His system was based on the principles of scientific approach, systematic, and consistency.

Lesgaft also made significant contributions to the development of sports training. He was one of the first to introduce the concept of periodization in sports training, which is now widely used in sports science.
