Peter Luger
Peter Luger[edit | edit source]
Peter Luger is a steakhouse located in Brooklyn, New York City. It was established in 1887 by Carl Luger, who was a Swiss immigrant. The restaurant was initially called "Carl Luger's Café, Billiards and Bowling Alley" and was later renamed to "Peter Luger" after Carl's son.
History[edit | edit source]
Peter Luger was a family-owned business until 1950 when the restaurant faced financial difficulties and was sold to Sol Forman, a regular customer. Forman's family still owns and operates the restaurant today. Despite the change in ownership, the restaurant has maintained its reputation for serving high-quality steak and has been awarded the James Beard Foundation Award for "Outstanding Restaurant" in the United States.
Menu[edit | edit source]
The menu at Peter Luger is simple and focuses on steak. The most popular item is the Porterhouse steak, which is dry-aged in-house and served for two, three, or four people. Other menu items include lamb chops, fish, and daily specials. The restaurant is also known for its German fried potatoes, creamed spinach, and famous "Luger's Special German Fried Potatoes".
Locations[edit | edit source]
In addition to its original location in Brooklyn, Peter Luger has expanded to include a second location in Great Neck, Long Island. The restaurant also operates a butcher shop next door to its Brooklyn location, where customers can purchase the same high-quality meats that are served in the restaurant.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Peter Luger has received critical acclaim for its steak and has been named the best steakhouse in New York City by Zagat Survey multiple times. However, the restaurant has also faced criticism for its high prices and no-frills service.
