Long Island

Long Island is a densely populated island in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of New York, lying in the northeast of the United States. It begins at New York Harbor approximately 0.35 miles (0.56 km) from Manhattan Island and extends eastward over 118 miles (190 km) into the Atlantic Ocean.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Long Island is comprised of four counties: Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. The westernmost end of Long Island contains the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, while the central and eastern portions are suburban (Nassau and Suffolk counties).
The island is surrounded by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east, and the East River to the west. The island's terrain is mostly flat, with some low hills in the central and eastern parts.

Long Island has a rich history that dates back to the Native American tribes who originally inhabited the area. The Tribal Territories included the Matinecock, Shinnecock, and Montaukett tribes, among others.
European settlement began in the 17th century, with the Dutch and English establishing colonies. The island played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, with the Battle of Long Island being one of the largest battles.

Long Island's economy is diverse, with sectors such as healthcare, education, technology, and tourism playing significant roles. The island is home to several major universities and research institutions, including Stony Brook University and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Long Island is well-connected by a network of highways, railroads, and airports. The Long Island Rail Road is one of the busiest commuter railroads in North America, providing service to Manhattan and other parts of New York City.
