Peter Scot

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Peter Scot is an Indian whisky brand, which has been produced by Khoday India Limited (KIL) since 1968. It is often recognized as the first premium whisky brand in India.

History[edit | edit source]

Khoday India Limited, a company with a diverse portfolio ranging from liquor to engineering, launched Peter Scot in 1968. The brand was named after Peter, a Scottish friend of the Khoday family. The 'Scot' in the name is a nod to the Scottish origins of whisky.

Production[edit | edit source]

Peter Scot is a malt whisky, which means it is made from a mash of malted grains, typically barley. The whisky is aged in oak barrels for a period of time, which contributes to its distinct flavor profile. The exact recipe and production process is a closely guarded secret of the Khoday family.

Legal Controversy[edit | edit source]

In 1986, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) filed a case against Khoday India Limited for using the term 'Scot' in their brand name, arguing that it could mislead consumers into believing the whisky was produced in Scotland. After a lengthy legal battle, the Supreme Court of India ruled in favor of Khoday in 2008, allowing them to continue using the name Peter Scot.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Peter Scot has been well received in the Indian market, with a loyal customer base. It is often considered a status symbol due to its premium positioning and higher price point compared to other Indian whisky brands.
