Phalacronotus bleekeri
Phalacronotus bleekeri is a species of catfish (order Siluriformes) of the family Bagridae. It is also known as the Bleeker's catfish or Bleeker's sheatfish. This species is native to Southeast Asia, specifically in the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, as well as the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Phalacronotus bleekeri is a medium-sized catfish that can reach up to 20 cm in length. It has a slender, elongated body with a flattened ventral surface. The body color is generally brownish with a lighter belly. The fins are relatively large, with the dorsal and pectoral fins having strong, serrated spines.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
The Phalacronotus bleekeri is found in freshwater environments such as rivers, streams, and floodplain lakes. It prefers slow-moving or still waters with a muddy or sandy bottom. The species is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, with populations in the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra.
Diet and Behavior[edit | edit source]
As a nocturnal species, the Phalacronotus bleekeri is most active during the night. It is a bottom-dwelling species that feeds primarily on small invertebrates, including insects, crustaceans, and mollusks. It uses its barbels to detect food in the substrate.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The conservation status of the Phalacronotus bleekeri is not well-studied. However, like many freshwater species in Southeast Asia, it is likely threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and overfishing.
In the Aquarium[edit | edit source]
The Phalacronotus bleekeri is not commonly kept in aquariums due to its nocturnal habits and preference for a specific type of environment. However, it can be a fascinating species for dedicated aquarists who can provide the right conditions.
