From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Phalaris aquatica, also known as bulbous canary grass or harding grass, is a species of grass native to the Mediterranean region. It has been introduced to many parts of the world, including North America, Australia, and New Zealand, where it is often used as a forage crop for livestock.

Description[edit | edit source]

Phalaris aquatica is a perennial grass that can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. The leaves are flat and wide, with a prominent midrib. The inflorescence is a dense, cylindrical panicle, often with a purplish tinge.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Phalaris aquatica is native to the Mediterranean region, but has been introduced to many other parts of the world. It is often found in wet habitats, such as riverbanks and marshes, but can also tolerate drier conditions.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Phalaris aquatica is often used as a forage crop for livestock, due to its high yield and good nutritional value. However, it can also cause phalaris staggers, a neurological condition in sheep and other livestock, if consumed in large amounts.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Phalaris aquatica is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of conditions. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but can also tolerate partial shade and heavier soils. It is often used in pasture improvement programs due to its high yield and resistance to pests and diseases.
