Phase Modulation (PM) is a modulation technique used in communications and signal processing where the phase of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of the message signal. This method is distinct from amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM), where the amplitude and frequency of the carrier wave are varied, respectively. Phase modulation is widely used in digital communication systems, including applications such as optical fiber communication, satellite communication, and radio frequency (RF) transmission systems.

Overview[edit | edit source]

In phase modulation, the phase of a carrier signal is changed by the input signal's amplitude. The phase shift is proportional to the amplitude of the input signal. When the input signal is high, the phase of the carrier wave shifts more, and when the input signal is low, the phase shifts less. This technique allows the transmission of data over a communication channel by modulating the phase of the carrier wave.

The mathematical representation of a phase-modulated signal can be expressed as: \[ s(t) = A_c \cos(2\pi f_c t + \phi(t)) \] where:

  • \(A_c\) is the amplitude of the carrier wave,
  • \(f_c\) is the frequency of the carrier wave,
  • \(t\) is time,
  • \(\phi(t)\) is the phase shift caused by the modulation, which is a function of the message signal.

Phase modulation is used in various applications, including:

  • Digital Communication: PM is a fundamental technique in digital communication systems, such as Phase-shift keying (PSK), which is used in many wireless and optical communication systems.
  • RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification): PM is used in RFID systems for transmitting data from tags to readers.
  • Satellite Communication: PM is employed in satellite communication systems for transmitting digital data over long distances.
