Philip Guthrie Hoffman
Philip Guthrie Hoffman (December 28, 1915 – October 29, 2008) was an American academic and university administrator. He served as the president of the University of Houston from 1961 to 1977 and as the first chancellor of the University of Houston System from 1977 to 1979.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Philip Guthrie Hoffman was born on December 28, 1915, in Kenton, Ohio. He earned his bachelor's degree from Wittenberg University in 1938. Hoffman then went on to receive his master's degree from Ohio State University in 1939 and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1948.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Hoffman began his academic career as a professor of history at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1948. He later joined the faculty at the University of Houston in 1957, where he served as a professor and eventually became the dean of faculties.
Presidency at the University of Houston[edit | edit source]
In 1961, Hoffman was appointed as the president of the University of Houston. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth and development at the university, including the establishment of new colleges and the expansion of research programs. Under his leadership, the university achieved state funding and became a state institution in 1963.
Chancellor of the University of Houston System[edit | edit source]
In 1977, Hoffman became the first chancellor of the newly established University of Houston System. He served in this role until his retirement in 1979. As chancellor, Hoffman played a crucial role in the expansion and organization of the system, which included multiple campuses and research centers.
Legacy and Honors[edit | edit source]
Philip Guthrie Hoffman is remembered for his contributions to higher education and his leadership at the University of Houston and the University of Houston System. The Philip Guthrie Hoffman Hall (PGH) on the University of Houston campus is named in his honor.
