Philip Morris (tobacconist)
Philip Morris was a British tobacconist and the founder of the company Philip Morris International, which is one of the largest tobacco companies in the world. He was born in 1835 and started his business in 1847.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Philip Morris was born in 1835 in London, England. Little is known about his early life and education.
Founding of Philip Morris[edit | edit source]
In 1847, Philip Morris opened a single shop on Bond Street in London, selling tobacco and ready-made cigarettes. This shop laid the foundation for what would become a global tobacco empire.
Expansion and Growth[edit | edit source]
The business grew steadily, and by 1854, Philip Morris had established a factory to produce cigarettes. The company continued to expand, and after Philip Morris's death in 1873, his widow Margaret and brother Leopold Morris took over the business.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Philip Morris's company eventually became Philip Morris & Co. Ltd., and later Philip Morris International. The company is known for its popular cigarette brands, including Marlboro, Parliament, and Virginia Slims.
